Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence in machines programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions.
The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving.
Machine learning is a branch of AI, based on the idea that systems can learn from data, identify patterns and make decisions with little human intervention. It focuses on the development of computer programmes capable of accessing data and using that data to take actions to achieve specific goals.
In other words, getting computers to ‘learn from experience’ (just as humans or animals would do, but probably a lot more quickly!)
Machine learning uses different algorithms (according to the information being sought) to interpret natural patterns in massive volumes of data. This provides valuable insights to help your decision-making process.
With the rise in big data machine learning is vital if you want to make better predictions and business decisions. Big data can be described as larger, more complex data sets, from new data sources which are so massive that traditional data processing software just can’t manage them. It can be used to address business problems you wouldn’t have been able to tackle before.
It is useful in a vast range of applications including predictive maintenance in engineering situations, medical diagnoses, credit scoring and forecasting, voice and face recognition. Or simply understanding your customers’ purchasing behaviour - for example, those ‘recommended for you’ pop-ups that we all regularly see are a result of machine learning based on your internet searches.
If you have a large and complex problem involving masses of data and lots of variables to solve, then you should consider using machine learning.
However, there’s a good deal to consider in creating a good machine learning system: using the right algorithms; data preparation capabilities; automation and iterative processes, and scalability for starters.
In 2019 we identified several opportunities to incorporate and develop machine learning tools for ourselves and our clients.
Our ongoing Research and Development in this exciting new area has enabled the start of new relationships and collaboration with projects on the OpenAL, AI Google and Amazon AI platforms, as well as commercial partners with a focus on automated content production using Natural Language Generation (NLG).
We are also proud to support AI Tech North - a collaborative platform for the AI community of the Northern Powerhouse in the UK. To learn more and sign up for forthcoming events, please visit www.aitechnorth.uk
